Nigerian political activist Aisha Yesufu has raised serious allegations of corruption within the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), claiming that its officials were allegedly bribed to remove the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Yesufu made the remarks on Monday during a live appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme. She specifically referenced reports that INEC officials received up to $50,000 in cash and plots of land as inducements.
“Where is the EFCC and ICPC in all of this?” she questioned, expressing deep concern over the alleged compromise of the electoral body.
The comments follow INEC’s recent decision to strip former Senate President David Mark of his position as the national chairman of the ADC.
Yesufu further alleged that the INEC Chairman was threatened into taking the action. She criticised the judiciary, accusing it of becoming a “willing tool of oppression” against opposition parties.
“The judiciary has turned itself into the plate of corrupt politicians,” she said. “You’re having places where houses are being built for them, where all sorts of meetings are going on and stuff like that. That’s what worries every one of us.”She emphasised the need for truly independent institutions, warning that the current situation undermines Nigeria’s democracy.“
This democracy, by the way, many people died for it for us to have what we have today, and we cannot have a few people come and destroy it just because they want to hang on to power that they are not deserving of,” Yesufu stated.
The activist’s strong remarks highlight growing tensions and accusations of electoral manipulation as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
