The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, has approved the restructuring of the Police Monitoring Unit to strengthen discipline and enhance operational efficiency within the Nigeria Police Force.
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Anthony Placid, disclosed this in a statement on Monday in Abuja.
Placid explained that the restructuring is part of ongoing reforms aimed at refocusing the unit on its core mandate and improving oversight across police commands and formations.
“As part of the reorganisation, the unit has been streamlined and strengthened to enhance proactive monitoring, intelligence-driven inspections, and real-time oversight of police personnel and operations across Commands, Formations, and Departments,” he said.
"The restructured framework also harmonises key investigative and monitoring functions in line with the force’s reform agenda.”
He added that the initiative seeks to promote professionalism, discipline, and accountability, with the unit playing a central role in identifying operational lapses, enforcing standards, and ensuring accountability at all levels.
As part of the changes, the IGP appointed Deputy Commissioner of Police Aliyu Abubakar as the new head of the restructured Monitoring Unit.
Abubakar previously served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department in the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State, where he played key roles in high-profile investigations and modernisation of investigative techniques.
