Ibadan Summit: You’re Wasting Your Time, Can’t Defeat Tinubu – APC Slams Opposition Parties

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the National Opposition Summit held in Ibadan as a futile exercise, declaring that opposition leaders are merely wasting their time and stand no chance of defeating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Sunday by the Oyo State Chapter of the APC, the ruling party described the gathering hosted by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde as an exercise in political futility.

The summit, tagged ‘National Summit of Opposition Political Party Leaders’, took place on Saturday in Ibadan and brought together prominent opposition figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, ex-Senate President David Mark, former governors Rauf Aregbesola, Aminu Tambuwal, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Rotimi Amaechi, and Babangida Aliyu, as well as Professor Jerry Gana, Aisha Yesufu, Professor Pat Utomi, Solomon Dalung, and others.

Reacting to the meeting, the APC’s Oyo State Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Sadare, said the opposition figures are “just wasting their time” as it is “impossible for them to catch up with a man who is several kilometers ahead of them in a marathon.”

The party insisted that any political realignment aimed at unseating President Tinubu in 2027 “cannot see the light of the day.”Sadare further warned Governor Makinde, stating that the 2027 polls would be hitch-free and credible, and that the governor “would not find an avenue to escape from the country before May 29, 2027 so that he would be made to answer for the many cases of abuse of office and corruption hanging on his neck.”

The APC’s reaction comes as opposition parties and leaders intensify efforts to build a formidable coalition against the ruling party ahead of the next general elections. The Ibadan summit is seen as a significant step in that direction, with several parties already signaling support for a united opposition front.

Political observers note that the sharp response from the APC underscores the growing tension and high stakes as the countdown to 2027 begins in earnest. While the opposition continues to strategize, the ruling party remains confident in Tinubu’s performance and political strength.
