I Will Attend ADC National Convention In Spirit - El-Rufai

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, on Monday declared that he would be at the African Democratic Congress (ADC) National Convention “in spirit,” even as he remains in detention facing corruption charges.

El-Rufai made the remark shortly after stepping out of the Kaduna State High Court, where he is standing trial on a nine-count charge brought against him by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The former governor, who has been in custody for over a month, arrived at the court premises around 9:00 a.m. He was briefly seen speaking with a loyalist about the convention, which is scheduled to hold in Abuja on Tuesday.

After approximately four hours of court proceedings, El-Rufai emerged accompanied by his legal team. When approached by journalists for comments on the ADC convention, he said calmly: “I will attend, but in spirit.”

He then boarded a Hilux vehicle and was driven away under tight security, escorted by armed police officers and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).

A heavy security presence was deployed within and around the court complex, with officers also stationed along major roads in the Kaduna metropolis.

El-Rufai is being tried alongside Amadu Sule on allegations bordering on abuse of office, fraud, intent to commit fraud, and conferring undue advantage.
