Gumi Calls for Peace, Mutual Respect Between Christians, Muslims

Prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has urged Christians and Muslims in Nigeria to embrace peace and mutual respect, while strongly condemning both blasphemy and lawlessness.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page on Tuesday, Gumi described such acts as irresponsible and incompatible with the teachings of all religions.

“Islam, in particular, is a religion of order and respect. Nobody is allowed to take the law into their own hands,” he said.

Gumi also appealed to non-Muslims to respect what Muslims hold sacred and avoid any form of desecration.

“A call to peace for every Christian and Muslim. Blasphemy and lawlessness are both irresponsible and antithetical to all religions,” the cleric stated.

He warned that foreign interests are eager to trigger religious conflicts in the country but expressed confidence that the majority of Nigerians will not allow themselves to be provoked into violence.“Any lawbreaker will have nobody to blame but himself,” Gumi added.

The message comes amid recurring tensions over religious sensitivities in Nigeria.
