Fire Destroys ₦56.8m Worth of Onions Stock in Sokoto

A devastating fire outbreak has destroyed 2,275 bags of onions in Kojiyo community, Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State, leaving farmers with estimated losses of ₦56.8 million.

The inferno, which occurred recently, razed about 65 traditional onion storage huts in the agrarian community, wiping out a major source of livelihood for dozens of farming families.

According to reports, each bag of onions was valued at approximately ₦25,000 in the local market, bringing the total loss to ₦56.8 million.

The incident has thrown affected farmers into economic distress, as the destroyed stocks represented significant investments after months of hard work and harvesting.

This latest fire adds to previous similar incidents in the region, raising concerns about the vulnerability of onion storage facilities and the need for better fire prevention measures in farming communities.

Local farmers and traders are now counting their losses, with many worried about repaying debts, paying school fees, and meeting household needs.
