The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has announced an indefinite strike starting Monday, April 20, 2026, affecting primary and secondary school teachers across the six area councils.
The union’s chairman, Comrade Abdullahi Mohammed Shafas, disclosed this on Friday after an emergency State Wing Executive Council meeting at the Teachers House in Gwagwalada.
The strike is triggered by the FCT Administration’s failure to release and implement the report of a committee set up by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike on July 7, 2025, to address outstanding entitlements of primary school teachers.
Shafas listed key demands including the removal of “vacancy” as a precondition for the promotion of classroom teachers and a comprehensive review of the 2004 promotion exercise to allow eligible teachers to advance.
Despite a seven-day ultimatum that expired on March 19, 2026, and an additional 28-day grace period, the FCT Administration has remained silent on the issues, the union said.
“The meeting resolved that all public primary and secondary school teachers in the FCT shall, with effect from Monday, 20 April, 2026, proceed on an indefinite strike until the demands of the union are met,” Shafas stated.
The union has directed all teachers to comply with the strike directive and advised parents to keep their children and wards at home until further notice.
Public primary and secondary schools in the FCT are scheduled to resume the second term on the same day the strike begins.
