Aloy Ejimakor, lead counsel to detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, has declared that every native of the former Eastern Region of Nigeria (Ndigbo) is a bona fide member of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Reacting to the Federal Government’s recent publication listing IPOB among sponsors of terrorism, Ejimakor argued that branding the group as a terrorist sponsor is flawed and unsustainable.
“This truth is self-evident: Every native of former Eastern Nigeria/Biafra (or NDIGBO) is ethnically a bona fide member of the Indigenous People of Biafra. So, naming IPOB a terrorist sponsor is akin to naming AREWA or ODUDUWA terrorist sponsors. It’s a misnomer that cannot stand,” he posted on X.
Ejimakor also described the inclusion of IPOB in the Nigeria Sanctions Committee (NSC) terrorism sponsors list as contempt of court, noting that Nnamdi Kanu’s case is still pending before the Supreme Court.
“The recent publication by the Federal government naming the #IPOB amongst terrorist sponsors is CONTEMPT of Court, because the case is still pending before the Supreme Court & therefore subjudice,” he added.
The controversial list, published by the NSC, includes IPOB alongside groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP.
It names Finland-based Simon Ekpa and several individuals, including Tukur Mamu, as well as numerous companies and other entities.Ejimakor had earlier criticised the Federal Government over the listing.
