The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and the Canadian government have held talks on strengthening collaboration to tackle terrorist financing and illegal mining in Nigeria.
The meeting took place at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja on Saturday, where representatives from UNODC and Canada’s counter-terrorism programme engaged with the commission’s leadership to explore new areas of technical support and partnership.
EFCC Executive Chairman Ola Olukoyede, who spoke through his Chief of Staff, Commander CE Michael Nzekwe, expressed appreciation for the ongoing support from UNODC and the Canadian Government.
“I appreciate strongly the support that has been coming from UNODC and from the Canadian Government,” Olukoyede said.
He noted that the EFCC has made significant progress in the areas of terrorism financing and illegal mining, securing a good number of convictions across its commands.
“The EFCC has been doing a lot in the areas of terrorism financing and illegal mining. We have a good number of convictions,” he added.
The EFCC boss also highlighted concerns about the evolving tactics of criminal networks, stressing the need for enforcement agencies to continuously upgrade their tools and skills.
“At our level, a lot has been done in-house, especially as it relates to terrorism financing, illegal mining and money laundering,” Olukoyede stated.
The Director of Investigation at the EFCC, Abdulkarim Chukkol, disclosed that the commission has intensified operations against illegal mining, resulting in increased arrests and prosecutions in recent months.
Officials from UNODC said the visit was aimed at deepening collaboration, particularly through existing technical frameworks designed to address transnational organised crimes.
The partnership is part of broader international efforts to curb illicit financial flows linked to Nigeria’s mineral sector, which has increasingly been exploited by criminal and terrorist networks.
Further details on specific outcomes and future action plans from the meeting are expected in the coming days.
