Defence Ministers Visit Troops in Borno, Reaffirm Anti-Terror Push

The Minister of Defence, Major General Christopher Musa (retd.), and the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, on Tuesday visited the Headquarters of the Theatre Command, Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The ministers were in Borno to assess ongoing counter-insurgency operations and reaffirm the Federal Government’s commitment to defeating terrorism and restoring lasting peace in the North-East.

Addressing journalists and troops, Musa commended the Armed Forces for significant progress made against insurgents, crediting improved coordination, professionalism, and sustained operations.

He stressed the need for continued national support and conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s appreciation for the sacrifices of the troops, urging them to maintain the current momentum.

The ministers paid tribute to fallen soldiers by laying wreaths at the Maiduguri Military Cemetery.

They also inspected a newly constructed Command and Control Centre designed to boost intelligence gathering and operational coordination, and commissioned new accommodation for military personnel to enhance welfare and morale.

The Theatre Commander, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, briefed the delegation on recent operational successes.

He revealed that troops neutralised over 280 criminal elements during the Ramadan period, disrupted terrorist logistics networks, rescued abducted civilians, and sustained pressure through coordinated land and air operations.

The visit began with a courtesy call on the Shehu of Borno, where the ministers praised the traditional ruler for his continued support to the military and commended the resilience of the people of the North-East.

Later, at the Borno State Government House, the deputy governor received the ministers and expressed gratitude for the sacrifices of the troops and the federal government’s support.

In response, the ministers assured that military operations would be sustained while collaboration with the Borno State Government would be further strengthened to improve security in the region.

The visit comes weeks after multiple suicide bomb attacks in Maiduguri in March 2026 that killed at least 23 people and injured over 100 others, highlighting the persistent threat of insurgency despite recent military gains.
