Akpabio Declares Three Senate Seats Vacant as Niger South Senator Defects to APC

Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday declared three senatorial seats vacant in the 10th National Assembly following the deaths of their occupants.

The affected districts are Enugu North (Enugu State), Nasarawa North (Nasarawa State), and Rivers South-East (Rivers State).

The late senators were Okechukwu Ezea (Enugu North), Godiya Akwashiki (Nasarawa North), and Barinada Mpigi (Rivers South-East).Announcing the vacancies during plenary, Akpabio stated: “I hereby declare vacant Enugu North Senatorial District. The seat is hereby declared vacant.”

He made similar declarations for the Nasarawa North and Rivers South-East districts. He directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct by-elections in the affected districts within the timeframe stipulated by the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

In a related development, Senator Peter Jiya, representing Niger South, defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Jiya’s letter of defection was read during plenary. He cited irreconcilable differences and internal crises within the PDP as reasons for his move.

The defection brings the APC’s strength in the Senate to 89 members, further consolidating the ruling party’s position in the upper chamber.

The events reflect ongoing shifts in Nigeria’s political landscape, with by-elections now expected in the three vacant districts and continued defections reshaping party alignments ahead of future polls.
