Court orders suspension of Adamawa State ADC congresses scheduled to commence today, following a suit by the factional state chairman Shehu Yohanna.
The planned congresses of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State, scheduled to begin today, have been suspended by a court order following a lawsuit filed by the factional State Chairman, Shehu Yohanna.
The development comes amid a deepening crisis within the party, which is currently divided into three major factions. One faction is loyal to former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, and is reportedly backing former Governor Muhammadu Jibrilla Bindow for the governorship ticket.
Another faction is aligned with Aisha Binani, while the third is led by Shehu Yohanna, who served as the party’s chairman before the ADC was adopted as a coalition platform.
Senator Ishaku Abbo, who belongs to the Babachir Lawal-led camp, has also boycotted the congresses. He accused the party of refusing to negotiate with Aisha Binani on the contentious issue of the party’s structure.
Similarly, Aisha Binani, who is eyeing the governorship under the ADC platform, is boycotting the congresses being organised by the Babachir Lawal faction.
The court’s intervention is seen as a temporary measure to resolve the leadership and structural disputes threatening the party’s cohesion ahead of future elections. Further details on the court ruling and the next steps for the factions are expected in the coming days.
