CAF President Patrice Motsepe Visits Senegal Amid AFCON Trophy Controversy

CAF President Patrice Motsepe arrived in Dakar on Wednesday for a high-level visit, nearly three months after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) controversially stripped Senegal of its 2025 AFCON title.

The visit comes at a tense time for African football’s governing body following its decision to overturn Senegal’s 1-0 victory over hosts Morocco in the Cup of Nations final played on January 18, 2026.

Motsepe is expected to meet with Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) President Abdoulaye Fall.

The agenda is believed to include efforts to ease tensions, discuss football development projects, and address the fallout from the controversial ruling.

 Background of the Controversy

Senegal defeated Morocco 1-0 in the final thanks to a late goal by Pape Gueye. However, following an appeal by the Moroccan federation, CAF’s Appeals Committee later awarded Morocco a 3-0 walkover victory and the title, while stripping Senegal of the championship. Senegal has since appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The ruling sparked widespread outrage in Senegal, with the national team and government continuing to celebrate the victory, including parading the trophy and awarding players with cash and land.

Motsepe’s visit is widely viewed as a “peace mission” aimed at calming the situation and maintaining unity within African football ahead of future competitions.
