Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 145 Battalion (Rear) have successfully uncovered and neutralized four Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) planted in Umuchima forest, Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State.
The operation, conducted in the early hours of Friday, April 3, 2026, was based on credible intelligence received by the Brigade Intelligence Regiment, according to a statement issued by Captain Muyiwa Ayara on behalf of the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 14 Brigade Ohafia.
The statement revealed that the IEDs were strategically positioned at multiple locations within the forest, apparently to restrict troop movement and safeguard suspected insurgent hideouts in the area.
“Detailed analysis of the intelligence prompted troops to launch a deliberate clearance and fighting patrol into the forest during which four IEDs were discovered,” the statement added.
The 14 Brigade Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was swiftly deployed to the scene. The devices were safely detonated in situ, while some components were recovered and moved to a secure location for further technical analysis.
The Nigerian Army described the operation as a significant success that will enhance ongoing intelligence efforts and provide deeper understanding of the operational tactics used by criminal elements in the region.
This development comes amid heightened security concerns in parts of the South-East, as security forces continue aggressive operations to dismantle insurgent networks and restore peace in affected communities.
