The Nigerian Army has strongly denied viral reports claiming that Brigadier General Oseni Braimah died because his vehicle broke down during a terrorist ambush on a military base in Benisheikh, Borno State.
In a statement issued on Friday, Lt. Col. Sanni Uba, Media Information Officer for the North-East Joint Task Force Operation Hadin Kai, described the circulating narratives as “false, misleading, and exaggerated.”
He said such reports, often accompanied by unrelated images and videos, aim to distort facts and undermine public confidence in ongoing military operations.
The Army clarified that the verified casualty figure from the attack stands at four personnel: two officers and two soldiers.
This contradicts earlier unverified claims suggesting up to 17 soldiers were killed.
Regarding General Braimah’s death, the spokesman explained that the Brigade Commander was in a high-grade Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle, which was temporarily immobilised during intense combat as he actively coordinated a counter-assault.
The Army stressed that this was due to the heat of battle, not equipment failure.
“Troops of Operation Hadin Kai repelled the attack, maintained control of their location, and forced the insurgents to retreat in disarray,” Uba added.
The incident occurred when terrorists launched a coordinated assault on the 29 Task Force Brigade headquarters in Benisheikh, Kaga Local Government Area.
President Bola Tinubu has since expressed condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers, including General Braimah.
The Army urged the public to rely only on official statements and disregard misleading content intended to cause panic. Clearance operations are said to be ongoing in the area.
