Amnesty International has strongly condemned a Nigerian military airstrike on Jilli Market along the Borno-Yobe border, stating that over 100 civilians were killed.
The strike occurred on Saturday at the busy border market between Gubio LGA in Borno State and Geidam LGA in Yobe State. According to Amnesty, three military jets bombed the area during a counter-insurgency operation.
The rights group said at least 35 injured people were taken to Geidam General Hospital. It criticised the military for carrying out air raids in a crowded civilian market.
“Such reckless use of deadly force is unlawful and shows a shocking disregard for human lives,” Amnesty stated.
The organisation has demanded an immediate, independent investigation into the incident.
Local sources say the death toll may be higher than 100, while the Nigerian Air Force has confirmed it carried out strikes on terrorist targets in the area and is investigating the reported civilian casualties.
Yobe State authorities have also acknowledged the incident and are providing emergency support.
