The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has heightened security at its Abuja headquarters following suspicions of a potential protest by aggrieved members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after the commission removed the party's leadership from its official portal.
The move came in compliance with a Court of Appeal order directing parties in the ongoing ADC leadership tussle to maintain the status quo ante bellum pending the determination of a substantive suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja. INEC removed the names of the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Senator David Mark (National Chairman) and Rauf Aregbesola (National Secretary), which had been uploaded to the portal in September 2025.
To prevent any breakdown of law and order, security agencies have cordoned off the INEC headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, with heavy presence reported, including blocked roads around the area.
This follows reports of planned protests, including calls for an “Occupy INEC” action by some ADC members, Obidient Movement supporters, and other groups.
INEC has maintained that its decision is strictly in line with the Appeal Court ruling and emphasized that the commission remains apolitical as Nigeria’s electoral umpire. It has also suspended engagement with all factions of the ADC amid conflicting claims, including a request from a faction led by Nafiu Bala to be recognized as national chairman.
A correspondent from the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Mie Ogidi, reported on the developments, noting the visible security measures in place. The leadership crisis within the ADC has led to competing factions, with protests already staged at INEC in recent days demanding recognition of one side or the other.
INEC has stressed it will await a final court judgment before taking further actions on party recognition.
