Aloy Ejimakor, counsel to detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, has revealed why President Bola Tinubu’s ‘City Boy’ movement for his 2027 re-election failed to gain ground in Nigeria’s Southeast region.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Ejimakor attributed the movement’s poor performance to deep-seated apathy among Igbo youths, who he says are largely uninterested in participating in any general elections while Nnamdi Kanu remains in detention.
“From my investigations, the City Boys movement quickly failed in the Southeast because vast majorities of Igbo youths are not interested in any general elections that will be held while Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains in prison,” Ejimakor wrote.
He described Kanu’s continued incarceration as the “Big Elephant in the room” that currently dominates political attitudes in the region.
The ‘City Boy’ movement had appointed popular businessman and hotelier Obinna Iyiegbu (Obi Cubana) as its Southeast Coordinator.
However, recent outings by the group, particularly in Imo State, recorded minimal success.
