2027: Atiku Should Step Aside for Younger Presidential Candidate – Senator Umeh

Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central, has urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to step down in favour of a younger candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Monday, the lawmaker described Atiku as a respected elder statesman in Nigerian politics who has contested the presidency since 2003.

He argued that it is now time for Atiku to play a fatherly role by mentoring and supporting the next generation of leaders rather than running again.

“I expected Atiku to step down for a younger candidate,” Umeh said. “Those people he wants to step down are coming with ideas that will promote the change Nigerians are looking for.”

The senator noted that Atiku recently stated in an interview that 2027 would be his last attempt at the presidency.

However, Umeh expressed disappointment that Atiku appears determined to run, warning that clinging to the ticket could create internal conflict within the ADC.

“To challenge a president who is not willing to leave, you must be offering Nigerians something different,” he added.

“If he holds onto that ground… it means that nobody is ready to concede an inch at all. So if they go all out to wrestle, it may get to the point that some people would have bloody nose in the end, and the thing that will suffer will be the party.”

Umeh’s comments highlight growing calls within opposition circles for generational change in leadership as political parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 polls.
