Youths Attempt to Disarm Soldiers Enforcing Curfew in Niger State's Borgu Area

In Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, a group of youths reportedly tried to disarm soldiers who were enforcing a local curfew, before escaping the scene, according to security sources.

The incident took place around 10:35 p.m. on March 10, during a routine patrol by troops from the 221 Battalion at Wawa Cantonment. The soldiers were enforcing a curfew imposed by the Borgu Local Government Chairman to maintain order in the area.

While patrolling near the Correctional Service Office in New Bussa, the troops stopped several motorcycles. Sources say some of the youths became aggressive, pelting the soldiers with stones, verbally abusing them, and attempting to wrestle a rifle from one of the troops in an effort to seize it.

In response, the soldiers fired warning shots into the air, which scattered the group and caused them to flee. The Controller of the Nigerian Correctional Service later reported the confrontation to the police. The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in New Bussa quickly deployed additional security personnel to the location, but by then the youths had already dispersed.

Local community leaders, including the village head, were summoned and advised to promote calm among residents and to prevent any further confrontations or misunderstandings with security forces.

No arrests were made, and there were no reported injuries on either side. Military patrols in the area have continued without interruption.
