World Cup 2026: FIFA Set to Select Replacement for Iran Following Withdrawal

FIFA is set to begin the process of identifying a replacement nation for Iran at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, after the country announced its withdrawal from the tournament.

The decision stems from recent US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran, which resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and significant damage in parts of Tehran, amid heightened geopolitical tensions. Iran's sports minister has stated that participation in the event primarily hosted in the United States is untenable under the current circumstances.

Iran had successfully qualified by topping their group in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) qualifiers. Their absence leaves an opening in Group G, which currently features Egypt, Belgium, and New Zealand.

According to reports, FIFA holds discretion under its regulations to replace a withdrawing team and is expected to prioritize a solution that maintains confederation balance.

Potential options under discussion include:

Fast-tracking the United Arab Emirates (UAE), who finished second in Iran's qualification group but lost to Iraq in the match determining the intercontinental playoff participant.

Awarding the spot directly to Iraq, which would alter the playoff dynamics and potentially shift the UAE into the intercontinental playoff instead.

Iraq is currently scheduled to face the winner of the Bolivia vs. Suriname playoff for a World Cup berth via the intercontinental route.

The 2026 World Cup, expanded to 48 teams and co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is slated to begin in June. All of Iran's planned group-stage matches were scheduled to take place in the United States.

FIFA has not yet issued an official statement on the replacement process, but sources indicate decisions could be made in the coming weeks to ensure tournament integrity and scheduling stability. The situation remains fluid amid ongoing regional developments.
