Workers Threaten Strike Over Delayed 40% Peculiar Allowance

Civil servants in Nigeria are on high alert, threatening to down tools over a delayed 40% peculiar allowance tied to the N70,000 minimum wage.

The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) has given the Federal Government a March 31 deadline to address the issue, warning that failure to comply will lead to industrial action.

The allowance, which was approved and meant to reflect the new minimum wage, has been pending since July 2024, causing financial hardship for thousands of workers.

According to the JNPSNC, despite repeated assurances, the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) has failed to issue the necessary circular and salary templates to facilitate payment.

"We are left with no option but to withdraw our services if the government fails to meet our demands," said a statement from the JNPSNC.

The workers' patience is wearing thin, and if the government doesn't act soon, it could lead to a nationwide disruption of services.
