A prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Adoza Bello testified that $760,910.84 was used to pay advance school fees for Bello’s children at the American International School Abuja (AISA).
Nicholas Okehone, an internal auditor at AISA and the 14th prosecution witness (PW14), gave the testimony on Thursday before Justice Maryanne Anineh at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja.
Bello faces a 16-count charge alongside co-defendants Umar Shuaibu Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, alleging criminal breach of trust and money laundering involving an estimated ₦110.4 billion.
Led in evidence by EFCC counsel Professor Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), Okehone confirmed that Bello had four children enrolled at the school. He identified Exhibit AX4 as a “Pre-Paid School Fees Until Graduation” agreement covering advance payments for their education.
The witness explained that the full amount of $760,910.84 was later refunded by the school to an EFCC account at the Central Bank of Nigeria after correspondence with the commission.
The testimony forms part of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) case linking the payments to alleged misappropriation of public funds during Bello’s tenure. The trial continues, with further proceedings expected to examine additional evidence related to the alleged fraud.
