Director of the U.S. National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC), announced his resignation on Tuesday, citing his opposition to President Donald Trump's ongoing military conflict with Iran.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Kent declared that he could no longer support the administration's policy. "After much reflection, I have decided to resign from my position as Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, effective today," he wrote. "I cannot in good conscience back this war.
"Kent, a longtime Trump supporter and former Army Green Beret, argued that the rationale for the conflict lacked foundation. He stated, "Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby."
Kent was confirmed by the Senate in July 2025 on a narrow 52–44 vote to lead the NCTC, an agency within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence responsible for integrating and analyzing intelligence on terrorist threats to the United States. He succeeded Christine Abizaid, who had resigned earlier.
A retired Special Forces veteran with 11 combat deployments, Kent previously worked in intelligence roles at the CIA. Before entering government service, he ran unsuccessfully for Congress twice in Washington's 3rd District as a Republican.
His nomination and confirmation process was highly contentious. Republicans praised his military background and counterterrorism experience, with Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Tom Cotton describing him as someone who had "dedicated his career to fighting terrorism and keeping Americans safe." Democrats, however, expressed concerns about his past associations and public statements.
Kent's departure represents a notable fracture in the administration's national security team as the U.S. continues its military involvement in Iran. The resignation has intensified ongoing debates in Washington about the conflict's justification, its strategic implications, and the broader direction of American counterterrorism efforts.
