Review security strategy after Maiduguri bombings - Atiku to FG

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has asked the federal government to review its security strategy following bomb explosions in Maiduguri, Borno state.

On Monday, 23 people were killed, with over 100 injured, after bombs went off at a market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office flyover in the capital of the north-east state.

In a statement issued by his media office on Tuesday, Abubakar condemned the attacks, noting that the north-east had experienced calm from bombings.

“I am very sad at the latest terrorist attacks in Borno State and the resurfacing of suicide bombings that were hitherto defeated,” Abubakar said.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain said the renewed waves of killing of soldiers and civilians by terrorists are reviving sad memories of 2014, when Boko Haram was most active in the country.

“While I commend the sacrifices of our servicemen in the conduct of unconventional warfare, the Tinubu administration should review its strategies. The resurgence of terrorism is capable of eroding public confidence in the ability of the government to protect its own citizens,” Abubakar said.

“Nigerians are not impressed with the government’s statements condemning terrorist attacks. They are more concerned about results. Results speak louder than the tough government’s rhetoric.”

The ADC chieftain alleged that the President Bola Tinubu administration is more focused on the 2027 politics than addressing worsening security challenges.

“One of the problems of the Tinubu administration is that the opinions of sycophants who hide the truth from the president are more respected than the opinions of well-meaning citizens who offer honest advice,” Abubakar said.

“Terrorists don’t know the difference between APC supporters and opposition sympathisers, and it’s therefore unhelpful to dismiss honest advice as politically motivated.”

Abubakar said a government that is “too heavily invested in the 2027 re-election campaign is unlikely to accept the reality of insecurity”.
