The Nigerian Army says its troops operating under the ‘Joint Task Force North West Operation FANSAN YAMMA’, have killed three suspected terrorists during an operation at Kadam forest in Tangaza LGA of Sokoto state.
In a statement on Monday, Olaniyi Osoba, acting deputy
director of army public relations 8 Division, said the terrorists were
affiliated with the Lakurawa terrorist group.
Osoba said intelligence reports showed that more than 100
terrorists had gathered in Kadam Forest to plan attacks and kidnappings in
nearby communities and move abducted victims to their hideouts.
He said troops were deployed based on intelligence and made
contact with the terrorists at about 12:00pm.
“The ensuing firefight was fierce and sustained. When the
terrorists attempted a rear-flanking manoeuvre, troops responded with superior
firepower, effectively neutralising the threat and maintaining tactical
dominance throughout the engagement,” Osoba said.
“Subsequent exploitation operations into the forest
confirmed the neutralisation of three terrorists, with several others believed
to have sustained gunshot wounds during their escape.”
He added that troops recovered several items from the scene,
including “one PKT machine gun, two AK-47 rifles, 350 rounds of PKT ammunition,
111 rounds of 7.62 Special, three magazines, two radios, three motorcycles and
a mobile phone”.
Osoba said follow-up operations are ongoing to ascertain
additional casualties among the terrorists and recover more equipment.
“Aggressive patrols and sustained offensive operations
continue across the general area to exploit this success, disrupt fleeing
terrorist elements and prevent their regrouping,” the statement added.
