President Tinubu Mourns Death of Football Legend Festus Adegboye Onigbinde

President Bola Tinubu has paid heartfelt tribute to renowned football administrator and former Super Eagles head coach, Chief Festus Adegboye Onigbinde, who passed away on Monday at the age of 88.

In a condolence message issued through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described Onigbinde’s death as a profound loss to Nigerian football and the broader sporting community.

President Tinubu extended his deepest sympathies to the bereaved family, friends, associates, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the National Sports Commission, former players, professional colleagues, and millions of football fans across the country who benefited from Onigbinde’s lifelong dedication to the sport.

The President highlighted Onigbinde’s pioneering role as the first indigenous coach of the Super Eagles in 1982, a historic milestone that paved the way for greater local participation in the management of Nigeria’s national team.

He praised the late Modakeke high chief for his steadfast commitment to grassroots football development and his pivotal contributions to strengthening football administration and governance in Nigeria.

President Tinubu specifically recalled Onigbinde’s notable achievement in leading the Super Eagles to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in 1984, a feat that underscored his tactical acumen and leadership.

“Chief Onigbinde will be fondly remembered for his discipline, integrity, foresight, and unwavering passion for the beautiful game,” the President stated.

He added that the late coach’s enduring legacy would continue to inspire generations of players, coaches, and sports administrators in Nigeria and beyond.

President Tinubu prayed for the peaceful repose of the departed soul and asked God to grant the family, loved ones, and the entire Nigerian football fraternity the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
