President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally sworn in Olatunji Rilwan Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP) during a ceremony at the Council Chambers in the State House, Abuja.
The inauguration marks the culmination of a swift leadership transition in the Nigeria Police Force, following the resignation of the previous IGP, Kayode Egbetokun.
Disu, who had been serving as Acting IGP since his appointment on February 24, 2026, was first decorated with the rank by President Tinubu shortly after assuming the acting role.
The Nigeria Police Council, chaired by President Tinubu, unanimously ratified Disu's appointment as the 23rd indigenous IGP during a meeting on Monday, March 2, 2026, at the State House.
The council's endorsement, attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, and other key stakeholders including the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, cleared the path for today's swearing-in ceremony, which took place amid the Federal Executive Council session.
Disu's elevation bypasses the traditional Senate confirmation process in this instance, as reported in various official and media accounts. Shortly after his confirmation, the new IGP wasted no time in action, inaugurating an eight-member committee to oversee the implementation of state police initiatives and advance his broader policing vision for the country.
President Tinubu has previously charged Disu with restoring public confidence in the police, strengthening discipline, enhancing inter-agency collaboration, and addressing national security challenges at this critical juncture.
Disu, born April 13, 1966, and hailing from Lagos Island, brings extensive experience to the role, having previously served in key positions including as head of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Lagos.
