Activist Arraigned in Akure Over Alleged Cyberstalking of Interior Minister Tunji-Ojo

A social crusader and activist, Emorioloye Owolemi, has been arraigned by the Federal Government before the Akure Division of the Federal High Court on allegations of cyberstalking Nigeria's Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

The two-count charge, marked FHC/AK/3C/26, accuses Owolemi of intentionally posting offensive, indecent, obscene, or menacing messages targeting the minister via his Facebook account.

According to the charge sheet, the alleged offenses occurred on December 23, 2025, in Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State. Count one claims that Owolemi knowingly sent electronic communications through a computer system (Facebook) that were grossly offensive or menacing in nature toward Tunji-Ojo.

The second count involves allegations of cyberstalking through threats and harassment. The case is tied to broader controversies surrounding the minister's National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate.

Earlier, on February 14, 2026, Owolemi secured an ex parte order from a Federal High Court in Abuja (presided over by Justice Binta Nyako) permitting an inquiry into Tunji-Ojo's academic and service qualifications. The Akure court has scheduled the matter for hearing on March 26, 2026.

If convicted, Owolemi could face penalties, including imprisonment or fines, under Nigeria's Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act.A civil society group, the Concerned Citizens Leadership Integrity and Transparency Advocacy Initiative (CLITA), has condemned the prosecution, describing it as an attempt at intimidation rather than addressing the credential questions through clarification.

The group argued that the minister should embrace constructive criticism in line with democratic principles promoted by President Bola Tinubu.

This development highlights ongoing tensions between government officials and critics using social media to question public figures' integrity.
