Tinubu More Powerful than Donald Trump - PDP Chieftain

A senior member of Nigeria's main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Emmanuel Ogidi, has sparked debate by asserting that President Bola Tinubu wields greater executive authority than United States President Donald Trump.

Ogidi, a PDP chieftain, made the bold claim during an appearance on Trust TV, where he highlighted the extensive powers of Nigeria's presidency compared to the checks and balances in the American system.

He argued that while U.S. presidents often face resistance from Congress in passing legislation, the Nigerian president can more readily secure approval from the National Assembly.

"The president of Nigeria is the most powerful president in the world. Trump? Tinubu is stronger than Trump," Ogidi stated. He elaborated:

"The bills that have been going to the National Assembly, Trump can’t do that one in America. Trump can’t get it done in the Senate or in the Congress. No, he cannot. But Tinubu can get it done. He can summon them. That’s how powerful the Nigerian president is. So the Nigerian president is so strong. That is why we must be very careful who you elect your president."

Ogidi's comments came amid broader frustration he expressed about Nigeria's political landscape and internal PDP challenges. He lamented recent defections by some party governors, insisting that those who left were not acting entirely of their own accord and that remaining members remain committed to democratic principles and party discipline.

"We are taking the bitter pill. That’s why we are frustrated. Nigerians are frustrated," he added, linking the powerful nature of the presidency to the need for careful leadership selection.

The remarks from the PDP figure typically critical of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government have drawn attention for their unusually complimentary tone toward President Tinubu's institutional leverage. No immediate reactions from other PDP leaders or the presidency were reported in connection with the interview.
