Tinubu Govt Only Targeting Political Opponents, Enabling Ethnic Militias — Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu's administration, accusing it of prioritizing the harassment of political rivals and supporting ethnic-based militias over addressing Nigeria's escalating insecurity.

Atiku's remarks came in response to a recent terrorist assault in Borno State, where suspected militants targeted a military base and an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Ngoshe, Gwoza Local Government Area. Reports indicate that more than 100 residents were abducted during the attack, which Atiku described as "deeply troubling.

"In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the former vice president expressed dismay over the government's handling of the incident and the broader surge in violence nationwide.

He argued that Nigerians have grown desensitized to ongoing bloodshed due to its frequency and the apparent lack of effective countermeasures.

Atiku claimed the federal government is "losing its grip" on combating terrorism and violent attacks. Instead, he alleged, authorities are more preoccupied with applying intense pressure on political opponents and enabling "self-serving ethnic militia groups."

He stated: “It is unfortunate that the current Federal Government appears to be losing its grip on the fight against terrorism and violent attacks. Instead, it seems more focused on unleashing intense pressure against political opponents and enabling self-serving ethnic militia groups.

“It is disheartening that those responsible for internal security, along with the elite of the ruling party, remain preoccupied with consolidating power, while vulnerable civilians and servicemen are being killed.”

Atiku's comments highlight his ongoing concerns about security lapses under the current administration, framing the Borno incident as part of a pattern where political priorities overshadow the protection of lives and territories.

No immediate response from the Tinubu government to these specific allegations was detailed in reports of the statement.
