President Bola Tinubu has directed the expansion of Nigeria’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiative to include electric vehicles (EVs) as part of efforts to promote cleaner, more affordable and sustainable mobility across the country.
The move, announced by the Presidency, aims to accelerate Nigeria’s transition from petrol-powered vehicles to alternative energy sources, reducing reliance on imported fuel, cutting transportation costs, and lowering carbon emissions.
Key Highlights of the Expanded Initiative
The original CNG programme, which includes the nationwide deployment of conversion kits for vehicles, will now incorporate support for electric vehicles.
Focus areas include promoting local assembly and adoption of EVs, alongside continued push for CNG-powered buses, cars, and commercial vehicles.
The expansion aligns with broader government goals of energy diversification, environmental sustainability, and boosting the local automotive industry.
This development builds on recent steps such as the approval of electric buses for civil servants and ongoing distribution of CNG conversion kits to cushion the impact of fuel subsidy removal.
Officials believe the combined CNG and EV strategy will deliver cheaper transportation options for Nigerians while positioning the country to benefit from global shifts toward cleaner energy in the transport sector.
The initiative is expected to create jobs in local vehicle manufacturing and assembly, stimulate investment in charging infrastructure for EVs, and support Nigeria’s climate commitments.
Stakeholders have welcomed the expansion, describing it as a bold and forward-looking policy that addresses both immediate economic pressures and long-term environmental needs.
