Suspected political thugs attacked Bemgba Iortyom, the newly appointed media consultant for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State, in Makurdi on Friday night, March 13, 2026, and set his car on fire.
The incident took place along George Akume Way in the heart of the Benue State capital. Iortyom, who had been appointed as PDP media consultant just hours earlier on March 13, 2026, by the state PDP Secretary, Mr. Dan Nyikwagh, said he was pulling off the road to park and make a phone call when five assailants riding two motorcycles suddenly blocked his path.
The attackers, armed with short axes, assaulted him before dousing his Peugeot 406 Saloon car with fuel and setting it ablaze. Iortyom escaped by quickly opening the car door and fleeing on foot.
He credited his quick thinking and what he described as divine intervention for surviving the attack unharmed. Witnesses at the scene reportedly only shouted at him to run, without attempting to intervene further.
After setting the vehicle on fire, the hoodlums fled the scene on their motorcycles, leaving the car completely destroyed and reduced to ashes.Iortyom reported the incident to the police on Saturday, March 14, 2026, and also spoke to journalists about the ordeal.
The Benue State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed that the attack had been reported and said investigations are currently underway.
While the exact motive remains unclear, many suspect the assault is politically motivated, given that it occurred shortly after Iortyom’s appointment was publicly announced. No arrests have been made as of now.
