Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, former Governor of Sokoto State and current representative of Sokoto South Senatorial District, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a resignation letter dated March 11, 2026, addressed to the chairman of his Tambuwal/Shinfiri ward in Tambuwal Local Government Area, Sokoto State, Tambuwal cited the PDP's persistent internal crisis, ongoing conflicts, leadership disagreements, and deepening divisions as key reasons for his departure.
He stated that these issues had "made it increasingly difficult for me to continue my active participation and commitment as a member" and had "weakened the unity and direction that once defined the party."
The decision came after "deep reflection and extensive consultations" with political associates and supporters.
Following his resignation from the PDP, Tambuwal formally joined the ADC alongside his associates and supporters, describing it as a platform built on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and a clear commitment to national development.
In a statement shared on his X account, Tambuwal expressed gratitude to the PDP for the opportunities to serve Nigeria and reaffirmed his dedication to democracy, justice, and national unity.
The move marks a significant blow to the PDP, which has faced prolonged internal crises, including leadership disputes and factional rivalries, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Tambuwal's defection adds to recent challenges within the party, following court rulings and factional activities.
