The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has announced May 23, 2026, as the date for its presidential primaries in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
The decision was reached during the party's 106th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on March 11, 2026.
The faction, operating under Wike's caretaker committee leadership, also released a timetable for other key primaries:
State Assembly primaries: May 2, 2026
National Assembly primaries: May 9, 2026
Governorship primaries: May 16, 2026
Presidential primaries: May 23, 2026
Additional preparations include the submission of the party register by April 10, 2026.
The announcement follows a significant Court of Appeal ruling on March 9, 2026, which upheld the legitimacy of Wike's caretaker committee by nullifying the rival convention held in Ibadan in November 2025 and dismissing related appeals.
The appellate court affirmed that the earlier processes violated party rules, the Electoral Act, and constitutional provisions, solidifying the Wike-aligned group's control over the PDP's structures.
In further steps to reorganize the party, the NEC confirmed that a national convention will take place on March 29–30, 2026, to elect new national officers and strengthen internal structures.
The faction is also advancing plans for electronic membership registration to modernize party operations.
The moves come amid ongoing efforts to unify the PDP following prolonged internal crises and litigation, with Wike's group emphasizing reconciliation, adherence to the rule of law, and readiness for the 2027 polls.
