Suspected Kuteb Youths Set Ablaze 18 Tiv Homes in Taraba Village Clash

In the early hours of March 9, 2026, suspected youths speaking the Kuteb language invaded Tompo Village in Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State, setting fire to at least 18 thatched houses belonging to Tiv residents.

Police sources confirmed the arson attack, which was first reported by a local resident, Zaki Thomas Yamusa of Army Gate 2. The assailants struck around 1:00 a.m., targeting homes owned by Tiv families who had only recently returned to the community.

Tompo Village had remained largely deserted for years due to a long-standing communal crisis between the Tiv and Kuteb ethnic groups that began in 2006. Tensions had persisted, displacing many residents over the intervening period.

In 2026, however, Tiv inhabitants decided to resettle in the area following a peace meeting facilitated with the Chief of Jenuwa Gida. The return appears to have triggered the violent reaction. The attackers burned down 18 round, thatched-roof houses, destroying stored food grains, mobile phones, and other personal belongings. Fortunately, no lives were lost in the incident.

A police detective team promptly visited the scene to document the damage through photographs as part of their initial investigation. Village heads from both affected communities have been summoned by authorities to help de-escalate the situation and prevent retaliation.

Security sources indicated that intelligence gathering is underway, with surveillance teams deployed to track down and arrest those responsible. The police command emphasized that investigations remain active, with intensified efforts to contain the incident and avoid a broader escalation into wider communal violence in the region.
