Sokoto: Lamido, Supporters Set To Dump APC

There are strong indications that Senator Ibrahim Lamido, representing Sokoto East Senatorial District, is on the verge of resigning from the All Progressives Congress (APC) amid deepening disagreements with the party leadership in Sokoto State.

Sources close to the senator suggest the move could happen within days, following a wave of defections by his loyalists.

Among those who have already left the party is Kabiru Shehu (also known as Kabiru Shehu Sarkin Fulani), a former APC chairman in Goronyo Local Government Area and one-time sole administrator of the council. Shehu, who served as chairman of the Lamido-backed APC faction, recently tendered his resignation letter.A senior aide to the senator, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the planned resignation forms part of a broader, coordinated decision by Lamido’s political base.

“All his supporters are set to leave the APC, including the senator himself. It is only a matter of time,” the aide said. While the exact reasons for the looming defection have not been officially disclosed, insiders attribute it to longstanding unresolved disputes within the party’s structure in Sokoto State.

Tensions reportedly escalated after factions loyal to Senator Lamido conducted parallel congresses, electing their own party executives at ward, local government, and state levels. This rift is said to stem from differences with the broader APC leadership in the state, particularly involving Senator Aliyu Wamakko.

As of the time of filing this report, neither Senator Lamido nor the APC leadership in Sokoto has issued an official statement on the development. Some reports suggest the potential move could be toward the African Democratic Congress (ADC), though this remains unconfirmed.

The situation highlights ongoing internal divisions within the APC in Sokoto State as political realignments continue ahead of future elections.
