Former Kaduna State Governor Malam Nasir El-Rufai is appearing today, Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at the Federal High Court in Kaduna, where his bail application is scheduled to be heard.
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) arraigned El-Rufai before Justice Rilwan M. Aikawa on a 10-count charge involving alleged conversion and possession of public property, as well as money laundering. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
El-Rufai was produced in court after spending over a month in ICPC detention. The court had previously adjourned the matter to today for the hearing of pending applications, including his bail request.
However, on March 27, 2026, the ICPC released him temporarily on compassionate grounds following the death of his mother, Hajiya Umma (or Ummar) El-Rufai, who passed away in Cairo, Egypt. Her funeral prayer took place at the National Mosque in Abuja on March 29, with burial at Gudu Cemetery. El-Rufai was allowed to attend the burial rites before returning for today's proceedings.
The case has drawn significant public attention, with El-Rufai denying all allegations. Today's hearing will determine the next steps regarding his bail.(Note: Some reports mention criticism of the ICPC's release decision in relation to the court-ordered remand, but the agency described it as temporary compassionate bail.)This updated version removes promotional ads, irrelevant side stories (such as deportations, ambassadors, or party politics), and unclear elements like "Smart Video" or watermarks for a cleaner, more professional news story.
