Prominent religious leader Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar has been arrested by authorities shortly after he hosted former presidential candidate Peter Obi in Kaduna State on Sunday.
Peter Obi broke the news early Tuesday morning, March 24, 2026, describing the development as deeply troubling and a threat to freedom of speech and movement in Nigeria.
“I have just been made aware early this morning that revered religious leader, Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar has been arrested by authorities shortly after hosting me in Kaduna on Sunday,” Obi stated on his verified X handle.
Obi warned that the incident underscores the shrinking democratic space in the country, where citizens and perceived political opponents face harassment and persecution.
“This development underscores the deeply troubling state of our nation and our democracy. This cannot be allowed to continue,” he added.
The former Anambra governor stressed that freedom of speech and free movement are fundamental hallmarks of any democratic society.
He urged the government to respect the rule of law and stop all forms of suppression and intimidation of dissent.Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar, a well-known cleric and gubernatorial aspirant in Kaduna State, had warmly received Obi during his nationwide consultation visit on Sunday.
