A Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus caught fire while in motion along Ikorodu Road on Wednesday morning, injuring several passengers in a frightening incident that highlighted ongoing safety concerns in Lagos public transport.
The blaze erupted inward toward Majidun when the vehicle suddenly burst into flames from the engine compartment around 6:30 a.m.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as passengers screamed and scrambled to evacuate the moving bus.
“It was like a scene from a horror movie,” recounted eyewitness Shade Jimoh. “The bus was moving normally, then flames just shot out from the engine. Everyone was panicking and rushing to get out.”
Some injured passengers reportedly struggled to escape as the fire spread rapidly, trapping them briefly during the evacuation. Fortunately, no fatalities were recorded, though the exact number of those hurt remains unconfirmed.
Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service officials responded swiftly after receiving a distress call at 6:48 a.m., arriving on scene by 7:01 a.m. at the Majidun Boma filling station area.
Spokesperson Shakiru Amodu confirmed the fire was brought under control, preventing further escalation.
The cause of the incident is yet to be determined, but witnesses and passengers pointed to a likely mechanical fault. One survivor, who escaped unharmed, expressed renewed worries about the reliability and safety standards of public transportation vehicles in the megacity.
This event comes amid recurring reports of vehicle fires and accidents on Lagos roads, raising fresh calls for stricter maintenance protocols and safety inspections for commercial buses.
