Senate Reverses Decision to Sack CAC Registrar After Apology

The Nigerian Senate has withdrawn its earlier call for the immediate removal of Hussain Ishaq Magaji, Registrar General of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), following his appearance before the Senate Committee on Finance and a formal apology for repeated absences.

The turnaround came during Monday’s session of the committee, chaired by Senator Sani Musa.

Last Thursday, the committee had escalated tensions by recommending Magaji’s dismissal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and even considering a warrant for his arrest, citing his repeated failure to honour invitations as disrespectful to legislative oversight.

Senators Orji Uzor Kalu and Adams Oshiomhole had strongly backed the motion, with Kalu urging the President to terminate the appointment and Oshiomhole proposing a temporary freeze on the CAC’s 2026 budget allocation until satisfactory explanations were provided.

At Monday’s hearing, Senator Musa noted that Magaji’s appearance came only after the committee’s strong pronouncement the previous week.

He stressed the importance of heads of revenue-generating agencies personally engaging with lawmakers, describing the earlier practice of sending junior officers as unacceptable.

Magaji apologised for the lapses, explaining that miscommunication during his travel from Lagos caused his late arrival.

He assured the committee that the CAC had now established a dedicated liaison office to handle all National Assembly interactions and pledged that such incidents would not recur.

“I sincerely apologise to the committee. I take full responsibility and hold this committee in high esteem,” Magaji stated.

Several senators, including Dicket Plang (Plateau Central) and former Senate Leader Yahaya Abdullahi, welcomed the apology and urged leniency, emphasising the need for a second chance while warning against future disregard for legislative summons.

A motion to rescind the earlier recommendation for Magaji’s removal, moved by Senator Isah Jibrin (Kogi East) and seconded by Senator Nasir Zango (Katsina North), was unanimously adopted by the committee.

Chairman Musa reaffirmed the Senate’s constitutional authority over oversight, stating: “The National Assembly is above everyone else.

"The Constitution empowers this institution to hold the President and other officeholders accountabl. No one should take this committee for granted.”

The committee accepted Magaji’s commitments and reminded the CAC of its obligation to submit transparent reports on revenue generation and operational expenditure.
