Senate Mourns Victims of Plateau Attacks, Demands Immediate Security, Humanitarian Action

The Senate on Tuesday mourned the victims of recent attacks in Jos, Plateau State, and called for urgent security and humanitarian interventions in the affected areas.

In a strong resolution, the upper chamber directed the Inspector-General of Police to immediately commence a thorough investigation into the killings and ensure that all perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted.

The resolutions were adopted following a motion sponsored by Senator Diket Plang (APC, Plateau Central), who expressed deep concern over the recurring attacks that have led to loss of lives and displacement of many residents.

Senator Plang highlighted the urgent need for humanitarian support for the victims and called on the Senate to direct the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to swiftly provide food, medical supplies, and other essential relief materials to the displaced persons.

The session, presided over by Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, observed a minute’s silence in honour of those killed. The Senate further directed the military to establish bases in the affected communities to bolster security presence.

Lawmakers also urged relevant government agencies to roll out immediate assistance to the victims while calling for increased recruitment into the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to strengthen operational manpower. In addition, the Senate resolved to send a high-powered delegation to the affected areas to sympathise with the victims and assess the situation on ground.

The resolutions followed a deadly attack by gunmen on Gari Ya Waye community in Angwan Rukuba district of Plateau Central, where police authorities confirmed that at least 26 people were killed and many others displaced.
