Security Tightened at Eagle Square as APC Prepares for 2026 National Convention

Abuja's Eagle Square, the designated venue for the All Progressives Congress (APC) 2026 national convention, was a hive of activity on Friday, March 27, 2026, as final preparations ramped up for the two-day event.

The venue was adorned in the party's signature colours, red, green, white, and blue — with the main stage fully set and APC flags hoisted, fluttering in the sunny but breezy morning weather. Pavilions for each state were clearly marked out in the designated polling area.

Heavy security presence was visible across the square, with personnel from the police, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other paramilitary agencies deployed. All routes leading to the venue were barricaded and strictly manned, forcing vehicular diversions and causing many Federal Capital Territory residents to trek to their workplaces.

Members of the Convention Venue Committee, chaired by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, conducted on-site inspections of the ongoing arrangements.According to APC officials, more than 8,000 delegates from Nigeria's 36 states and the FCT are expected to attend the convention, which will be led by President Bola Tinubu alongside 31 state governors and members of the federal cabinet.

The party has opted for a consensus approach in its proceedings, describing it as a demonstration of unity and orderliness within its ranks. On Thursday, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris  who serves as Co-Chairman of the convention’s Media and Publicity Committee  briefed the press on the party's readiness, logistics, and messaging. He urged committee members to collaborate in unity and make necessary sacrifices to communicate the party's vision effectively.

“A lot of sacrifice is expected from all, in line with the party’s vision for a united and disciplined approach to communicating to Nigerians,” Idris said. He also emphasised the need for the APC to uphold strong internal democratic values, describing the convention as a key milestone in strengthening the party's structures and democratic processes.

The national convention is scheduled to hold on March 27 and 28, 2026.
