Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 14th Emir of Kano, has revealed that his dethronement as emir in 2020 spared him potential public humiliation and gave him the opportunity to pursue advanced academic studies during his years away from Kano.
Speaking at the Fola Adeola Annual Ramadan Lecture on resilience in adversity, Sanusi reflected on how divine will, rather than personal power, ultimately determines outcomes in life.
He cautioned against the common tendency to credit individuals for success or failure, stressing that circumstances shift according to God’s plan.
Drawing from his own experiences, the former emir described the challenging periods following his removal as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in 2014 and his subsequent deposition as Emir of Kano in March 2020.
Sanusi explained that being away from Kano after his dethronement shielded him from possible public embarrassment or degradation that might have followed if he had remained in the traditional role amid political tensions.
“People often attribute power and outcomes to individuals, but everything changes by the will of God,” he said.
“My faith helped me endure those difficult times.”He highlighted how the enforced break allowed him to focus on further academic work and personal growth, turning what many saw as a setback into a period of reflection and development.
Sanusi’s remarks come amid his reinstated position as Emir of Kano following a reversal of his 2020 deposition by the Kano State Government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The lecture underscored themes of patience, trust in divine timing, and maintaining dignity in the face of adversity lessons he said were reinforced by his turbulent journey through high-profile public roles.
The annual Ramadan lecture, organised in honour of businessman and philanthropist Fola Adeola, draws prominent speakers to discuss faith, leadership, and perseverance during the holy month.
