Chaos erupted at a Renewed Hope South-East Youth Tour empowerment programme in Owerri, Imo State capital, on Saturday when an enthusiastic crowd surged forward, disrupting the event and carting away items intended for distribution.
The programme, organised under the Renewed Hope agenda to engage youths and support President Bola Tinubu’s initiatives, was held at Heroes Square as part of a broader national youth tour and empowerment drive.
It featured the City Boy Movement (CBM), a youth-led group backing the administration, and aimed to distribute empowerment materials to participants.
Eyewitness accounts and video footage circulating online show a massive turnout that quickly overwhelmed organisers.
As distribution began, some attendees reportedly broke through barriers, stormed the venue, and seized bags, foodstuffs, household items, and other empowerment packages meant for orderly handover.
The sudden rush caused confusion, panic, and a brief stampede, with unidentified individuals making away with large quantities of the materials.
Organisers struggled to restore order, and the event was effectively disrupted before full completion.
The Renewed Hope National Youth Tour, which kicked off in the South-East region around March 13–14, 2026, seeks to mobilise young people, promote government programmes, and build support ahead of future political engagements, including Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
No injuries were immediately reported from the incident, though the disruption highlighted challenges in managing large crowds at public empowerment events amid high expectations and economic hardships.
Authorities and event organisers have not yet issued an official statement on the losses or any planned follow-up actions, but social media reactions described the scene as a mix of frustration over scarcity and opportunistic grabbing.
