Remove regulatory charges on fuel to cushion effect of Middle East conflict - ADC tells Tinubu

Bolaji Abdullahi, national publicity secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has asked President Bola Tinubu to remove import and regulatory charges on fuel to cushion the effect of the Middle East crisis on the citizenry.

Abdullahi made the call in a statement on Monday in response to a rebuttal issued by Sunday Dare, special adviser to the president on media and public communication, over the ADC’s birthday message to Tinubu.

He said Nigerians are grappling with the effects of rising fuel prices and the broader cost-of-living crisis over the war in Iran.

“On the price of fuel, is the Tinubu government telling Nigerians that there is nothing they can do to bring down the price of fuel?” he asked.

Abdullahi said several countries have taken emergency measures to control fuel costs in the wake of the conflict.

“To start with, and this is what the ADC would do, suspend the 5% fuel tax and remove import and regulatory charges that drive up the pump price of petrol,” he said.

“This would immediately lower fuel costs, and with it, transport and food prices.”

Abdullahi said the removal of fuel subsidy had contributed significantly to the rise in petrol prices.

“These are the direct consequences of decisions taken under the Bola Tinubu-led APC administration, particularly the abrupt removal of fuel subsidy without any immediate or credible cushioning for over 200 million Nigerians,” he said.

“Today, fuel prices have risen by nearly 500%, and everything else has followed.”

Abdullahi said Nigerians are expecting concrete actions from the government to ease the burden on citizens.

“Nigerians do not need more explanations. We need a government that understands what people are going through, and acts to make life easier, not harder,” he added.
