Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and a former senator, has officially entered the race for the 2027 Ogun State governorship election under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The epidemiology expert, who recently returned to active politics after over a decade focused on academia and public health, made her formal declaration during a media briefing at the APC Media Centre.
She expressed strong confidence in securing the party's ticket and ultimately winning the election.During the session, Sen. Obasanjo emphasized her commitment to mobilizing Ogun State's women and youth as key drivers of her campaign.
She pledged to leverage their energy and support to reposition the state as a thriving commercial and economic powerhouse."I am going to win," she asserted, highlighting her extensive experience including her past roles as a senator representing Ogun Central (2007–2011) and as a former Commissioner for Health in the state as proof of her readiness to deliver consistent, service-oriented leadership.
Her entry adds a prominent voice to the growing lineup of aspirants eyeing the seat currently held by Gov. Dapo Abiodun, whose second term ends in 2027.
Obasanjo, who recently joined the APC after years away from partisan politics, dismissed notions of being a placeholder candidate and reaffirmed her full dedication to the contest.
The development has sparked discussions across the state, with many noting the historic potential of her aspiration to make Ogun the first state to elect a female governor in Nigeria.
