The Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) has confirmed it has received approval to pay one month’s outstanding wage award to federal workers, out of the three months that have remained unpaid since July 2024.
In a statement signed by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Mr. Bawa Mokwa, the OAGF announced on Monday, March 2, 2026, that the payment process for the one-month wage award arrears has been completed and will be effected alongside the February 2026 salaries.
The office also stated that it commenced payment of February 2026 salaries to treasury-funded federal workers on the same day.
The delay in February salary disbursement was attributed to a technical glitch, which has since been resolved, with measures put in place to avoid future occurrences.
The development follows sustained pressure from organised labour, which had accused the government of withholding funds already earmarked for workers.
Labour leaders claimed relevant agencies were prepared to process payments but were awaiting release of funds from the Ministry of Finance.
Last Friday, the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (Trade Union Side) issued an ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding immediate clearance of the three months’ wage award arrears and other unpaid allowances across ministries, departments, and agencies.
The letter, addressed to the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, warned that failure to comply would lead the eight civil service unions to take “decisive action.”
The wage award dispute has persisted for over two years, stemming from the Federal Government’s approval of a N70,000 minimum wage following the removal of fuel subsidy in 2023.
While partial payments were made under pressure, the backlog of three months has deepened economic hardship for federal civil servants.
The partial payment of one month’s arrears represents a step toward addressing the outstanding claims, though labour unions are expected to monitor progress on the remaining two months and other entitlements.
