A private aircraft conveying David Jimkuta, senator representing Taraba south, made an emergency return to Abuja after developing a technical fault shortly after take-off.
The incident occurred on Saturday while the senator was
travelling to Kashimbila airport.
In a statement, the senator’s office said Jimkuta was en
route to Takum and Wukari.
He was billed to attend the 2026 Zion Conference in Takum
and pay condolence at the Catholic Diocese of Wukari following a fire incident
at St Mary’s Cathedral.
The statement said the aircraft departed Abuja after an
initial delay caused by weather conditions.
However, about six minutes into the flight, an alarm
sounded, and the pilot alerted passengers to a technical problem.
The pilot immediately turned the aircraft back to Abuja in
line with aviation safety procedures.
“Acting with professionalism and in line with aviation
safety protocols, the pilot immediately turned the aircraft back to Abuja,
where it landed safely,” the statement reads.
Magaji Jirape, president of the Christian Reformed Church of
Nigeria (CRCN), was among those on board the aircraft.
Istifanus Gbana, former speaker of the Taraba state house of
assembly, and Adi Shekarau Masa-Ibi, APC youth leader, were also on board.
“All passengers and crew members returned safely to Abuja,
and we thank God for His mercy and preservation,” the statement reads.
The senator expressed gratitude to God for sparing their
lives.
“Senator Jimkuta expresses profound gratitude to Almighty
God for sparing their lives,” the statement added.
The senator’s office said details of the rescheduled visit
would be communicated later.
