Private jet carrying Taraba senator develops fault mid-air

A private aircraft conveying David Jimkuta, senator representing Taraba south, made an emergency return to Abuja after developing a technical fault shortly after take-off.

The incident occurred on Saturday while the senator was travelling to Kashimbila airport.

In a statement, the senator’s office said Jimkuta was en route to Takum and Wukari.

He was billed to attend the 2026 Zion Conference in Takum and pay condolence at the Catholic Diocese of Wukari following a fire incident at St Mary’s Cathedral.

The statement said the aircraft departed Abuja after an initial delay caused by weather conditions.

However, about six minutes into the flight, an alarm sounded, and the pilot alerted passengers to a technical problem.

The pilot immediately turned the aircraft back to Abuja in line with aviation safety procedures.

“Acting with professionalism and in line with aviation safety protocols, the pilot immediately turned the aircraft back to Abuja, where it landed safely,” the statement reads.

Magaji Jirape, president of the Christian Reformed Church of Nigeria (CRCN), was among those on board the aircraft.

Istifanus Gbana, former speaker of the Taraba state house of assembly, and Adi Shekarau Masa-Ibi, APC youth leader, were also on board.

“All passengers and crew members returned safely to Abuja, and we thank God for His mercy and preservation,” the statement reads.

The senator expressed gratitude to God for sparing their lives.

“Senator Jimkuta expresses profound gratitude to Almighty God for sparing their lives,” the statement added.

The senator’s office said details of the rescheduled visit would be communicated later.
