The Peoples Democratic Party in Bayelsa State has elected new leaders across its eight local government areas following congresses held over the weekend. The exercise was reportedly peaceful, with consensus arrangements used to select party executives.
Speaking on Saturday at the Ogbia Local Government Centre, PDP caretaker chairman in Bayelsa State, George Turnah, said the people of Ogbia LGA and the state remain deeply committed to the party, which has historically provided leaders at both state and federal levels.
He warned those who defected to other parties that PDP is mobilising to reclaim its mandate ahead of the 2027 general election and the 2028 off-cycle governorship election.
Turnah highlighted the party’s achievements in Bayelsa, noting that PDP has produced leaders ranging from deputy governors to acting Presidents.
He added, “PDP is Bayelsa, and Bayelsa is PDP. The support you see here reflects the strong grassroots presence of the party. With God on our side, we will reclaim Creek Haven, the seat of power in Bayelsa State.”
He commended PDP faction leader, Nyesom Wike for providing effective leadership and Governor Douye Diri for maintaining a safe and conducive political environment for all parties. Turnah also acknowledged INEC’s monitoring of the congresses, noting that delegates from all 105 wards across the state attended their local government headquarters, demonstrating active citizen participation in the party’s democratic processes.
The newly elected Ogbia LGA PDP chairman, Ofoni Morgan, described Bayelsa as a PDP stronghold and pledged, “Ogbia and Bayelsa State have always been loyal to PDP. We will do our best to ensure the party retrieves its mandate and takes back this state come 2027.”
The congresses mark a significant step for PDP’s internal consolidation, aiming to strengthen party cohesion and mobilise grassroots support ahead of upcoming elections in the state.
